An often overlooked theater venue right under our noses will blossom this weekend with two performances of Spring Awakening. This cutting edge, Tony Award winning musical comes to the Oak Room at the Citadel by way of the Beckwith Theater of Dowagiac, where the play has sold out 7 performances over the past two weekends.

Directed by professional tenor and Citadel voice instructor Paul Mow, Spring Awakening captures the angst and emotion of coming of age in 19th century Germany. Coupled by a five-piece orchestra, with jaw dropping choreography by Aura Ankli, Spring Awakening is guaranteed to illuminate the Oak Room in a way you never imagined.

Theater in the Arts District. The possibilities are endless.

Show Details:

Saturday, April 28 at 7:30pm

Sunday Matinee, April 29 at 2:00pm

We’re talking about the magical appearance of “Bottled and Broken”, a glass and iron sculpture now gracing the point of Art’s Park.

Shawn Watt, recipient of the 2007 Tackett Family Young Artist Award, describes the work as a ”bottling of emotions and the feelings of brokeness that follow”. Jerry Catania, who provided guidance for Shawn in its construction, sees the iron as a representation of Mother Earth and the glass component as a ‘tear catcher’ – a small glass bottle used by ancient Egyptians during funerals to catch tears and put them in the tomb.

Whatever the origin or intent, we are most happy to welcome “Bottled and Broken” to our Arts District. Thank-you Shawn!

The past few weeks have seen the arrival of several new sculptures to the Arts District. This recent addition is the first of two pieces that are the product of a collaboration between NTAA and the Krasl Art Center. This installation, titled “Wood Nymphs”, is the work of sculptor Mark Chatterly and is part of the KAC Biennial Sculpture acquisition program.

An official (and progressive) welcome party and dedication for these and other Biennial sculptures will occur on May 11, beginning at 5:00 pm at the Studios at 210 Water and continue on to the Box Factory and the Krasl Art Center. Join us in welcoming these great additions to our neighborhood!

Last Thursday something exciting happened in the Arts District. The Third Thursday Film Club watched what became the number one ranked movie in the entire film series. “Encounters At The End Of The World,” garnered a whopping 4.46 out of 5.00 rating by the audience.

For the past 7 years, a group of film lovers have been gathering in the Arts District to watch movies. From November to April, on the third Thursday of each month, great movies are being viewed on the big screen at 210 Water Street in the Benton Harbor Arts District. It is open to the public, $7 for NTAA members and $8 for non-members. Free popcorn is provided and people are encouraged to bring their beverage of choice. Most nights before the movie begins, people gather around 7:00 p.m. to enjoy drinks, talk and share information about what’s happening in and around the Arts District. Next month’s movie, Sin Nombre, will be shown on March 15th. Please think about joining us and meet new friends. Ciao!
